I can not tell you how sad I was when I discovered that the Gadjah Mada University decided to use the principles of anatomy and physiology Tortora and Derrickson for the first course of anatomy and physiology at Instead of this book. This book did an excellent job of putting subjects in a sequence that is good to follow, with a plethora of beautiful photos and drawings, and makes a section entitled homeostatic imbalance right after an article and explains some problems that go wrong on the part of the human body. Most chapters have a section even closer with a rather corny they think is funny with an article which is often topical and relevant. Really above and beyond in the muscle and bone chapters (both give you a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost all). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand, is the basis or details of a subject very good. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, overthrew during most of the work and raised questions or indicated how is something great. I think keeping this reference book for a long period. Medical students should keep their eyes at this medical book.

Also, I have found an excellent anatomy and physiology study guides, which come in three volumes, which were quite helpful when I needed to know the kinds of questions that I asked for my tests. Top 4 Medical Books for 1st year Medical Students

It's been 6 blocks in my 1st year education at faculty of medicine gadjah mada university. I wanna share which book u will need to read in your 1st year medical course.
In 1st Block, We learnt about how to study in medical faculty. I thougt every student will learnt more than learning objective. Almost students had ethusiasme to study about the clinical case, dengue fever, purpura, metabolisme of hemoglobin, regulation of immune system, etc. Whereas, that clinical case will be studied in next blocks. Bio medical science will be studied in block 2 untill block 4, then we will learnt about clinical case since we reach block 7. What we learnt in block 5 and 6? I think it is a funny block because we learnt about "pancasila", medical entrepreneurship, and bioethic.
Let me review what book you need in your 1st year medical course
1. Dorland Dictionary
When you are approaching block 1, U will learnt about medical terminology. This medical dictionary will be usefull book that help you find the meaning of an unfamiliar terms.



2. Textbook of Medical Physiology
eventhough we didn't have to learnt physioogy at block 1, i recommended this medical books to be your 5stars physiology's books. It will help you when you was searching for learning resources in tutorials. This books will be usefull books in block 2, 3, and especially block 4. In 4th Block, you have to study about physiology of several system organs, like digestive, circulation, respiratory, and genitourinary. These Guyton physiology books will perfectly help you reached the university learning objective. As supplements, u can read physioloy of human body, this book more simple and easy understanding than guyton. You can also choose tortora's physiology as your supplements.
3. Harper's Biochemistry
Only several students who choose this book to be 5stars medical books because biochemistry is not a famous and intersting subjects as physiology and anatomy. BUt, this biochemistry books will completely help in Block2. In that block we will learn about several biochemistry reaction in human body, learn about nutrition like carbohydrates, protein and lipid. As I know, no other book that help me as well as harper's biochemistry.
4. Sobotta Atlas Anatomy
It's been the most famous atlas in my college. As I know, Anatomy is the most famous and intersting subject. In block1, we learn about anatomy of skeletal. we study about musculoskeletal anatomy in block 3. Then, in block 4, We will litte bit dizzy because we must study 5 system organs just in 6 week, this atlas anatomy will decrease your dizziness. Keep smile at this atlas of human body. As supplements, You can have clinically oriented anatomy or yokochi's atlas. Those book will be usefull books if you wanna be anatomical assistant when you reach your 2nd year course.

Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials is clear and good for last-minute revision, but written in a style that is very easy on the reader. The Organization of the chapters is perfect.

My only criticism is that the oxygen and CO2 dissociation curves are not very precisely drawn, but the medical book is otherwise full of useful charts.

Well worth adding to your collection.

I recommended that you also learn physiology from Textbook of Medical Physiology.

Textbook of Medical Physiology

This book is exceptional at explaining physiology. During my first year in medical school I used Principles of Anatomy and Physiology as the text for medical physiology and I found it to be a very good text. But reviewing physiology during my second year I used the text by Guyton and I couldn't believe how well written and clear it was. Both texts are excellent and I give both 5 stars, but I would definately recommend Guyton for a first read, and then Principles of Anatomy and Physiology.

I recommend supplementing reading in Respiratory physiology by West or weinburg, Renal Physiology by rose or vander, and GI with Johnson. Cardiology use cardiology essentials. Endocrine, Guyton is good. Nerve and Muscle physiology use Berne and Levy; and Neurophysiology I highly recommend reading Neuroscience by Purves and Essentials of Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology by Gilman.

Guyton and Hall Physiology Review

I give this book 5 stars because the contents are simple and are very representative of medical school physiology exams, which often require a greater understanding of the material than is required to answer the questions. I found a majority of the questions to be detail oriented questions that you would be hard pressed to glean from BRs Physiology or possibly from lectures (I read through this book after having taken a course in physilogy).This physiology book is very useful for flushing out any deficiencies you may have in your understanding because while overall I feel it is weak, there are some very good questions that test basic concepts. Therefore the book can be used as a supplement or as a quick review for the boards to check for understanding of material. With all that said, I highly recommend reading Guyton and Hall Physiology Review.
