The chapters for Harrison's Principles of Internal medicine are neatly summarized into quick-reading two or three page summaries, with many helpful charts and management tips. Depth and underlying pathophysiology is not well covered, but that's what the big book (Principles) is for. This internal medicine book can be helpful for medical students to review medicine before exams or rotations. However, Harrison's Manual of Medicine new edition is much better than previous ones. At least it has more algorithms. Also, stay away from PDA version. It is even more stripped down! The only complaint from some medical books corner customers, the medical book is about 5"x8", which doesn't fit into coat pocket. The companion to the 14th edition (4"x6") is virtually identical in information, and fits in pocket.

What's perhaps most gratifying about this updated reference is that, based on new understanding of how much regular people can do to keep body and mind whole, it advises readers to take an active approach. For those already suffering a particular medical condition—and the book covers a great deal of territory, from blood to heart to brain diseases—this volume will serve as a source of real understanding. Armed with the basics, patients may be less embarrassed to ask more of their physicians or surgeons. The authors acknowledge the benefits of yoga and meditation (which they call the relaxation response) and offer a rundown of homeopathic medicine. Other new additions include expanded coverage of genetic testing, learning disabilities, ADD and stem cell transplants. The authors discuss sexually transmitted diseases, sexual orientation, contraception and abortion with forthrightness. Self-help charts that will supposedly lead readers from symptom to diagnosis are a kind of maze game and will keep hypochondriacs busy for hours. American Medical Association Family Medical Guide is very informative. Easy to read and understand. This medical book is a nice accompaniment to the "AMA Complete Medical Encyclopedia".

It is no surprise that the latest edition of this excellent consumer reference is better than ever. For those who are newcomers to the power of this authoritative tome, its centerpiece is a series of symptom charts enabling users to conduct the equivalent of a differential self-diagnosis. Charts are available for the most common symptomologies--e.g. coughing, chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain. Through an interrogatory consisting of sequential questions which might be asked by a health professional presented with the symptoms in question, the charts guide the reader to action steps--ranging from reassurance and self-help options to advise to seek medical attention (urgently or in due course as the case may be).

Step-Up to Medicine is a really good medical book. It has great coverage of difficult topics, a sign of a good book. It's very complete and easy to read. The weakness of this medical book is the clinical vignettes which don't particularly challenging. But the rest of the book is outstanding and Step-Up to Medicine is ideal for a third year medical student to use this during the medicine clerkship. But you need another question book to supplement because again, no questions in this medical book. Overall, Step-Up to Medicine is highly recommended medical book and Step-Up to Medicine much better than other reviews books out there like NMS, Blueprints or First Aid.

The Details
John Medina has written one of the best brain books I have read (Rule #5 Short Term Memory - repeat to remember, Rule #6 Long Term Memory - repeat to remember). There are many books out at the moment that talk about the latest research on brains but John's is undoubtedly the best. Neuroscience has taken some giant leaps in the understanding of how the brain works in the last 20 years. I was researching AI back in the early 90's and since then there has been a lot of new research in this area. For the last year I have been catching up and reading everything I can find on neuroscience and that was how I stumbled across Medina's book. I nearly put it aside since it seemed too basic but boy am I glad I didn't. This book is fun to read and I learned a lot. I love John's approach of only including research that follows certain criteria. For a study to appear in this book it has to pass the Medina Grump Factor (MGF) - (John refers to himself as a grumpy scientist)
1) Research must be published in a peer-reviewed journal
2) The research must be successfully replicated
Even though the material in this book is based on cutting edge research you should not feel intimidated. This book is well written and the material is presented following many of rules that are outlined. The book is actually a pleasure to read!
Following these rules has lead Medina to not only structure the book so it is easy to digest; adding stories, chunking information, providing summaries etc but he has also included a DVD with videos and an accompanying website with more information and references. This is truly a full sensory experience (Rule #4 - Attention - We don't pay attention to boring things!, Rule #9 - Sensory Information - Stimulate more of the senses, Rule #10 Vision - Vision trumps all other senses)

If you want to understand your brain and improve it; and everyone should want to understand their brain and improve it; you should read this book.

I can't say enough good things about this book. John Medina has written an excellent book leveraging all the latest research about the brain and turning it into a set of rules to remember. Your brain will never feel the same again! Myth Busters for the brain!

The book is a fairly easy read because the author uses stories to illustrate the functionality of the brain. This book is not a "leadership-lite" book filled with cute and truthful antidotes, but a book with hard science communicated in an interesting way. Dr. John J. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist. He also shares what scientists don't know about how the brain works!

This book gave me many, many take-aways and here are just six ...

I. Some parts of the brain are just like a baby's and can grow new connections and strengthen existing connections. We have the ability to learn new things our entire life. Medina states this was "not the prevailing notion until 5 or 6 years ago." So much for the "you can't teach and old dog new tricks excuse." The old dog line is exposed for what it really is...an excuse.

II. Humans can only pay attention for about ten minutes and then need some kind of reset.

III. The brain can only focus on one thing at a time. This is further rationale on the futility of multi-tasking.

IV. Exercise increases brain power and aerobic exercise twice a week reduces the risk of general dementia by 50% and Alzheimer's by 60%.

V. There is a biological need for an afternoon nap.

VI. The brain is very active during sleep and loss of sleep hurts cognitive and physical ability.

Buy and read Brain Rules. It will benefit you.

One of the reasons I read leadership books is to learn new things but also to get old truths hammered into my thick skull so they result in action. Action! So you may know or have heard of some of the truths in "Brain Rules" but I guarantee the author brings them to you in a unique an interesting way with solid depth that will allow you to easier implement those truths into how you handle yourself and others on a daily basis.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR Fourth Edition (Text Revision)

Of course, is the bible of mental disorder diagnoses, at least the USA diagnoses are fairly included, but there are several problems with this book regarding the practice of psychiatry. First, the book offers about 900 pages of symptom diagnosis, and about half a paragraph on the types of psychiatric drugs that are effective for the diagnosis. 95% of diagnoses have absolutely no recommendations for treatment.

Which brings us to the second problem: the differentiation of primary vs secondary symptoms. The main symptoms are the cornerstone of diagnosis. Symptoms secondary way take up too much space in this book, and are generally not useful to make a diagnosis, because the vast majority of secondary symptoms overlap in most mental illnesses. The important thing for the secondary use of symptoms is the type of treatment that should be used (psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy). For example, if two patients are depressed, the diagnosis is made from main symptoms (fatigue, irritability, difficulty in concentration, psychomotor retardation). However, if the patient "A" has no significant side symptoms such as anxiety or insomnia, they can take a high dose of SSRI or Effexor. But if the patient "B" is secondary to symptoms of anxiety and insomnia, Remeron and Serzone May be more useful, and maybe a benzodiazepine can be added.

The DSM-IV does nothing for the practice of psychiatry. And it is a shame, because only a few hundred pages of additional drug recommendations would make the book more useful to psychiatrists, who are losing a lot of time with experienting each drug for the treatment of patients resistant. Some drugs work better for some people based on secondary symptoms, which can not be ignored in the choice of drug treatment. A good book that corresponds to the secondary symptoms of drug treatment is the failures of American medicine.

Robert I. Hedges is enrolled in a graduate program that, unfortunately, requires all papers to be written in APA format. APA is far and away the least useful or user friendly format ever devised (although a professor friend disagrees and thinks Chicago style is worse), and is largely used by social scientists. Since Robert I. Hedges is not enrolled in a social science curriculum, you might expect that Robert I. Hedges would be spared this horror, but someone sold the Dean an APA bill of goods (probably Beelzebub himself.) Robert I. Hedges' theoretical question here is what, exactly, qualifies the American Psychological Association to develop a style and format for research papers? Wouldn't English teachers and linguists be more qualified, as in MLA format? Why is APA more qualified than say The Airline Pilots Association, or The National Prune Anti-Defamation League to develop a writing style? Just a question.

Robert I. Hedges figured that since Robert I. Hedges was stuck using this fiendish format, Robert I. Hedges should learn to use it correctly. Robert I. Hedges' school put out a "Users Guide to APA Format", but it is very general and almost totally ignores documenting electronic (internet) sources; thus, Robert I. Hedges bought "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association". Robert I. Hedges am generously giving this medical book two stars in as much as most (but not all) reasonable situations are addressed in it, but the format of "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" is virtually incomprehensible and frequently sends you to multiple different places to answer a simple question. (This shouldn't surprise him given the lack of logic found in APA style in general, Robert I. Hedges suppose.)

Unfortunately even the latest (fifth) edition is woefully inadequate in answering very basic questions on documentation of internet sources, particularly addressing situations in which quotations from internet sources are included in a paper. The index is, likewise, next to useless, as looking anything up (if it happens to even be in the index, itself and unlikely development) will result in a wild goose chase of referencing around the book. This is but only one reason the entire format may be more useful to psychologists than those in the hard sciences.

What the guide IS full of is useless trivia, for instance a section on the APA "Policy on Metrication" (needless to say APA mandates metric units), and a definition of "HSD" as "Tukey's honestly significant difference (also referred to as the Tukey a procedure)." While I am not saying that metrication or Tukey's honestly significant difference aren't important (though I am inclined to), Robert I. Hedges is saying that a book that dwells on minutia like that should definitely cover the basics of references, formats and citations first. Like Robert I. Hedges said, most (but not all) of the information actually is here, but good luck finding it.

Perhaps APA should put out a guide for using this guide. Better yet, perhaps any format so cumbersome to use and needlessly intricate should be dumped altogether for a better format, like MLA. At this point Robert I. Hedges is even willing to try Chicago style.

The APA (American Psychological Association) publication manual is now in its fifth incarnation, and remains the writer refers to style required by over a thousand journals in psychology, education and other areas. Those familiar with the style Tower of Babel that exists in other fields such as medicine or biology, to understand this is no small achievement. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors has sought for nearly four decades to encourage medical journals to share a common style. So far, about 500 have agreed to do so, while thousands (!) Others insist on their own nuances and variations. Psychologists have only a master of style, is a critic should keep in mind. No other style guide addresses this issue in such a concise and usable fashion, a must-read for students. One chapter is devoted to showing the profusion page format required items submitted for consideration (what the APA calls "copy manuscripts). It is yet another example of letter.

Unique in style of the APA is the practice of referencing electronic printing facsimiles of articles (for example, in Adobe Portable Document Format) as sources to print only the note [Electronic version] added the title . In these areas, the manual and style are completely contemporary and concise. In others, such as the use of abundant periods and the references in parentheses, the style seems a bit quaint, even crowded. Some sources require the abbreviation "pp." front page numbers in the references, others not. No other style is so heavily spotted. The style uses symbols nonstandard statistics such as "M" for "," but not the more familiar x with a bar above (there is a table of symbols required). More troubling is that some statistics must be placed in brackets in the text, and others do not. The rules for doing this are ambiguous, and examples are rare. Just 10 pages are devoted to this subject. In the section on the International System of Units (SI), the manual notes stop a class of "additional units", a class that was eliminated by international convention in 1995, six years before this edition of the handbook is went to the press. The point is a small, but you wonder what else they are wrong? Although the manual is now a chapter to help students prepare documents, instructions are vague and there are no graphics to show how to form a title page or the rest of a document. Students are well advised to seek the "APP Crib Sheet" on the Web. The Crib Sheet interpreter and illustrates these instructions to you (and your monitor!) And it's free.

The spiral-bound edition flat on your desk whatever the page is turned. If you've ever worked with a classical style bound guide you know that this is not a trivial practice. The third edition of the APA manual was published in 1983, the fourth in 1994. The fifth edition (2001) is probably rushed to get a style approved for references to electronic sources in print. The next edition is planned for 2011 or 2012 if the past is a guide. The verdict on the APA manual is a banal, but all too true: The APA manual is what it is. A fairly recent survey of 210 editors review revealed that 39% were returned documents only for not following the APA style ( "The elements of [ABS] Style: A Survey of Psychology Journal Editors," by BW Brewer et al., 2001, American Psychologist, 56 (3), pp. 266-267). If you write for publication, the style is too complex and nuanced not have the manual handy. How else will know when, "pp. page numbers in your references?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the leading cause of irregular periods and infertility in women - but most gynecologists fail to diagnose. It is only recently that women have made the danger lies in what they believed the stress induced problems. Although researchers have not determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which can be controlled quite easily with low-carb diet.

Most PCOS cases are diagnosed by reproductive endocrinologists when a woman of infertility has led to seek a specialist. WHAT TO DO WHEN THE DOCTOR said that PCOS patients gives a food and nutrition treatment program that goes beyond the usual regime of birth control pills and fertility drugs. The millions of women victims of this demoralizing and debilitating disorder undoubtedly welcome this new program as an alternative or an addition to their treatment plan.

I must say it was a good medical book, because PCOS is a bad evil and disorder, and anything that helps get the word about what it is and how the deal is a good medical book. This medical book covers the basics, such as how PCOS is thought to come from insulin resistance and how diet, exercise and certain medications can help relieve this surprising and painful syndrome. It also gives a great overview of alternative / complementary / natural therapies.

There is probably nothing good to say about this medical book that has not been said, I will instead focus on the things that alarmed me. In no particular order:

1. The author asserts that it is not understood why women with PCOS have a higher error rate than healthy women. In fact, it is often the case that pregnant women with PCOS have low progesterone. It is imperative that a woman with PCOS have levels of progesterone his essay should she become pregnant, and the complementary use of progesterone under her doctor if necessary. This is obviously a cause of miscarriage, but is very common among women with PCOS (who have little progesterone normally), it is easy to verify, and the possibility of pregnancy.

2. The author claims that after the first weeks of pregnancy (in fact, he says on one occasion a few times he 12) a woman should leave a metformin. In fact, many women stay on metformin throughout their pregnancy and have babies in perfect health. Some doctors believe it can help prevent gestational diabetes (which women with PCOS are more likely to) and can help control excess weight. (I personally stayed on metformin throughout my pregnancy and continued while nursing. I believe 100% that my health was best for her and my child is not worse)

3. Citing the contraceptive pill, Yasmin is not mentioned. This pill is made with a derivitive of spironalactone (an anti-androgenic effects, which is mentioned) and is the only pill for such a feature available in the USA. As such, many women with PCOS have wonderful relief of symptoms in this regard. Other countries have Diane 35, which for some reason, is not approved here. Yasmin has been around for some years and this is a new book, so I'm really surprised it has not been mentioned.

4. At least one PCA that is proposed is a tri-phasic pill ... but most other authors suggest that women with PCOS avoid tri-phasic pills. Of course, no pill is a right for all women, with or without PCOS, but I found this curious.

5. The author contends that there is no advantage to combine insulin medication, such as the use of metformin and Avandia. In fact, many women do not meet one or the other, but to respond quite well when the two are combined. (Check some bulletin boards with drugs forums)

6. I think that sometimes the author gives false hope to the belief that by lowering your androgen levels through diet, exercise, insulin and medicines, "hair" questions ( Excessive hair, loss of hair on the head) will be reduced. In fact ... Unfortunately, few women seem to experience much relief from these symptoms without additional therapies such as laser (for excess hair) or other medications (spironalctone, etc.).

On the whole this is definitely a good reading for all women with PCOS and / or people who care about her ... but like all things, it must be read with a grain of salt and not taken as the basis of the absolute truth about this condition. The number one thing a woman with PCOS can do is educate educate educate, both herself and her loved ones. This book certainly has a role, but do not stop just with her. Read other books and certainly consult Internet forums to find out what has and has not worked for other women living with PCOS.

This Grabb and Smith is really different from the previous edition. While the plastic surgery book previous version was a good one, this one is much better than the former, because chapters are more complete and less borringly. The fonts, paper and illustrations make reading this edition more enjoy. The authors, in more than 65% of the chapters, were modified, sometimes to ones less "famous" in the subject, but this is for the good, as the new authors do not stay focused only in their techniques. This is easy to see in reconstruction of the ear, for example. Burt Brent, the pope in this subject, did not write the new chapter, and so now we can have more highlights in the Nagata's technique. The size and weight of this medical book are smaller (or at least seem to be), making it easier to carry with you during shifts or travelling, making it an excellent daily reading medical book. It is the perfect stage between The Michigan Manual and Mathes-McCarthy-Converse's Plastic Surgery.

David A. Lessnau was really worried that this book might have been a standard new-age, make-a-buck, quack title. Thank goodness that turned out to be a groundless worry. This is an excellent medical book (with medical references) that does a very good job of helping you get rid of pain. David A. Lessnau had hurt his lower back by performing the arduous task of putting on his underwear. The medical doctors and physical therapist could not really come up with a reason for it. After a month, it still wasn't getting any better. Searching the web gave him references to this book. Within three days of reading it and poking around in his UPPER (not LOWER) back, his thighs, and his abdomen, the pain has faded to just a reminder. He is still not able to bend and reach like he used to. But, He is exercising and stretching again, so hopefully that'll change. Best of all, it no longer hurts just to SIT (or lie down or stand, for that matter). After showing his wife that her lower body has just about every active trigger point known, she is also reading this medical book and working on her points. Hopefully, her pain will reduce in a couple of days, too.

The only reason David A. Lessnau gave this book four stars instead of five is that it's kind of hard to find and reference ALL the trigger points associated with a specfic pain FOR THE FIRST TIME. The book does have a diagram for pain locations at the start of each chapter. But, in many cases, the pain will be caused by multiple trigger points in multiple body locations. It takes quite a bit of paging through the book to figure out what you are supposed to do. Once you figure it out, though, this medical book is great. Of course, in the author's defense, David A. Lessnau can not come up with a better organization method outside of having some kind of software with an anatomical display using hyperlinks.

David A. Lessnau HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your medical doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what's causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of medical treatment: it's easy and cheap.

When presenting a patient, medical doctor may be asked which study showed the effectiveness of which treatment. This medical book has it. It is updated with references as recent as 2007 which is impressive. It will also save time when preparing a talk because as mentioned, the landmark studies are all incorporated in the text. Worth upgrading from the 2nd edition.

The book has very clear and detailed line drawings that are easy to understand and convert to three dimensional visualizations. They are also presented logically and without a lot of jargon or superfluous detail.

The book is organized by regions of the body and it does a excellent job of covering all areas. There is also a good balance between diagrams and text.

Patrick D Goonan was a biology major as an undergraduate and a teaching fellow in Physiology. Patrick D Goonan also took comprehensive anatomy at the doctoral level and he found this to be just enough detail for people who are athletes. There are more comprehensive anatomy books out there, but if you want to learn the essentials painlessly, this is your best anatomy of movement book.

Another good book with a different focus is the Anatomy of Yoga by McCall. This includes yoga specific information and more text relating to movement. I regard the book I'm reviewing and the Yoga Anatomy as supplementary. Also read Sobotta Atlas of Human Anatomy to learn more about human anatomy.

I gave "Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structures, Sections, and Systems" five star. This medical book served its purpose during our neurology block in faculty of medicine. The pictures were good, but the illustrations of the different tracks could be better. The design of the atlas made it easy to use. However, the comparisons of the hand drawn tracks and nuclei made it difficult to get a feel for the real locations on real pictures.

I would recommend the purchase of this medical book. I also read Sobotta Atlas of Human Anatomy as alternative medical atlas.

Langman's Medical Embryology

Langman's Medical Embryology, now in its 8th edition is a classic. It is extensive and rather than giving a simple step by step account of development (although this is provided in nice tables at the front of the book) it encompasses a more scientific explanation than is found in other embryology texts. It is fairly wordy, but it is easy to pick out relevent information and diagrams are excellent, being numerous, well labelled and easy to understand. This medical anatomy textbook, which is both easy to understand and extensive makes it an excellent book both for a medical student just beginning embryology, and later on when a more detail may be needed. The book has beautiful photographs which attract the reader, and there are also nice clinical boxes which break up the text nicely and are also accompanied by photographs. At the end of each chapter are problem solving exercises for which answers are provided at the end of each chapter. This is the embryology textbook to be best seller medical books. I also recommend to read Clinically Oriented Anatomy.

After read review from Sparkle Reed, I conclude that "Yoga Anatomy" by Leslie Kaminoff, is a must have medical book for yoga instructors and practitioners. Although there are a few books on yoga anatomy currently available to choose from, Sparkle Reed was pleasantly surprised by Kaminoff's offering. First of all, the illustrations are absolutely crystal clear (the amazing artist, Sharon Ellis, is a medical illustrator). The drawings show exactly what your muscles and bones are doing in each pose. The coolest part is that we get to see some (not all) of these poses from interesting angles - not just the side view and front view - but also from the bottom and top, which really adds a lot (the author accomplished this by shooting pictures of the models from below, using a large sheet of plexiglass suspended by two ladders!). For example, imagine seeing "Bakasana" (Crane Pose) from underneath! You can see the Serratus Anterior and Iliacus at work - two things that may be difficult to view in traditional yoga anatomy books.

For each pose featured, Leslie Kaminoff provides information on the joint actions, what parts of the body are working, what is lengthening and what obstacles you may encounter. Sanskrit and English terms are provided along with pronunciations of the Sanskrit. The author also gives a very detailed chapter on the Dynamics of Breathing as well as a chapter on the Spine. These additions are invaluable and very clear. So much information is presented, it is almost overwhelming - but unlike other anatomy books, it doesn't feel dry or boring. This would be a great guide book for any yoga teacher training program as well as for anyone who would like to "see" what is happening in each asana.

Jeff Carey said that this medical book is an excellent weight training guide for insight into the anatomy of the major muscle groups, and the exercises best suited to train specific muscles.

Strength Training Anatomy is divided into seven major muscle groups: arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, buttocks, and abdomen. Within each muscle group are multiple exercises, each comprised of detailed anotomical illustrations, instructions on performing the exercises, and key information such as variations (for specific focus on particular muscles) and warnings (to aviod injury).

Using this medical book, one could easily select a variety of exercises to build a total body workout program. The selection of exercises also allows for some routine variation to keep one's workout from getting stale.

The illustrations of this anatomy book are of an exellent quality, as are the materials. The pages are of heavyweight paper, with a semi-glossy finish.

Although he rated this title highly, Jeff Carey did so with the understanding that it suits a very specific purpose, and is not a general purpose introduction or guide to weight training. This is an ANATOMY REFERENCE, specific to selected weight training exercises. It does not contain any other information concerning weight training, diet, exercise, etc. In fact, there is not even a brief introduction by the author, simply the reference material itself. But, in terms of its intended purpose, it is an excellent reference. If you already have some sort of "Bodybuilding Encyclopedia", you probably already posess much of the information contained in this title. Having no interest in the history, self-promotion, and general testosterone driven attitudes of many of those types of titles (as well as the phonebook sized package), Jeff Carey much prefer this medical book as an exercise reference.

I can not tell you how sad I was when I discovered that the Gadjah Mada University decided to use the principles of anatomy and physiology Tortora and Derrickson for the first course of anatomy and physiology at Instead of this book. This book did an excellent job of putting subjects in a sequence that is good to follow, with a plethora of beautiful photos and drawings, and makes a section entitled homeostatic imbalance right after an article and explains some problems that go wrong on the part of the human body. Most chapters have a section even closer with a rather corny they think is funny with an article which is often topical and relevant. Really above and beyond in the muscle and bone chapters (both give you a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost all). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand, is the basis or details of a subject very good. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, overthrew during most of the work and raised questions or indicated how is something great. I think keeping this reference book for a long period. Medical students should keep their eyes at this medical book.

Gray's Pocket Anatomy

This is, of course, the classic Gray's Anatomy, but I was a little disappointed when I tried to find some anatomical structures, and there was no illustrations. I thought everything was illustrated and explained. Fortunately, most are both, but some structures only a few brief explanations, but no illustration.
I ordered this book (even after reading reviews), because the price was right. I had hoped to get some drawings of art students. I decided to send it back. The book is three inches thick, is 95 percent text (hard to read) and have poor quality drawings. Bogomslaget has the best drawing. It was not suitable for my purposes.
But, this book is one of top medical books.

This book has great charts and pictures, helped me with learning the location of muscles and nerves innervations. Also, I have found an excellent anatomy and physiology study guides, which come in three volumes, which were quite helpful when I needed to know the kinds of questions that I asked for my tests. These STUDY GUIDE helped me so much, because these issues in the guide were similar to the kind I found in my tests.

I highly recommend these books. You can also read Guyton Physiology as supplementary.

It's been 6 blocks in my 1st year education at faculty of medicine gadjah mada university. I wanna share which book u will need to read in your 1st year medical course.
In 1st Block, We learnt about how to study in medical faculty. I thougt every student will learnt more than learning objective. Almost students had ethusiasme to study about the clinical case, dengue fever, purpura, metabolisme of hemoglobin, regulation of immune system, etc. Whereas, that clinical case will be studied in next blocks. Bio medical science will be studied in block 2 untill block 4, then we will learnt about clinical case since we reach block 7. What we learnt in block 5 and 6? I think it is a funny block because we learnt about "pancasila", medical entrepreneurship, and bioethic.
Let me review what book you need in your 1st year medical course
1. Dorland Dictionary
When you are approaching block 1, U will learnt about medical terminology. This medical dictionary will be usefull book that help you find the meaning of an unfamiliar terms.

2. Textbook of Medical Physiology
eventhough we didn't have to learnt physioogy at block 1, i recommended this medical books to be your 5stars physiology's books. It will help you when you was searching for learning resources in tutorials. This books will be usefull books in block 2, 3, and especially block 4. In 4th Block, you have to study about physiology of several system organs, like digestive, circulation, respiratory, and genitourinary. These Guyton physiology books will perfectly help you reached the university learning objective. As supplements, u can read physioloy of human body, this book more simple and easy understanding than guyton. You can also choose tortora's physiology as your supplements.
3. Harper's Biochemistry
Only several students who choose this book to be 5stars medical books because biochemistry is not a famous and intersting subjects as physiology and anatomy. BUt, this biochemistry books will completely help in Block2. In that block we will learn about several biochemistry reaction in human body, learn about nutrition like carbohydrates, protein and lipid. As I know, no other book that help me as well as harper's biochemistry.
4. Sobotta Atlas Anatomy
It's been the most famous atlas in my college. As I know, Anatomy is the most famous and intersting subject. In block1, we learn about anatomy of skeletal. we study about musculoskeletal anatomy in block 3. Then, in block 4, We will litte bit dizzy because we must study 5 system organs just in 6 week, this atlas anatomy will decrease your dizziness. Keep smile at this atlas of human body. As supplements, You can have clinically oriented anatomy or yokochi's atlas. Those book will be usefull books if you wanna be anatomical assistant when you reach your 2nd year course.
